Sleep troubles and disorders

Sleep disorders are more frequent that you’d think. Many of you know how frustrating is not being able to fall asleep. Gazing at the alarm clock every half hour, turning around and counting sheep to get rid of the naughty thoughts that would keep you awake… And all those noises that you can’t even notice during daytime are now amplified and very disturbing. I’m not even mentioning here the snoring of your bedroom partner!
For this last trouble, I have only few tricks to share:
  1. get some ear plugs if you can bear them overnight
  2. get a separate bedroom
  3. get to sleep before he does
  4. get another bed partner
As for the rest of your sleeping troubles, yes, I tried several tricks that worked fine for me, either one at a time or in combinations. Indeed, I don’t suffer from major sleep disorders to make me seek for medical help, but some of you may be in this situation. Doctors can help, so I’d say you should go and finally be able to get some night rest.
The best one, which I used for several years with great results, is to practice a relaxation technique when going to bed. Most of the times I did not even have enough time to finish the procedure before falling asleep. For the ones interested in this, you might want to know that there are may techniques of relaxation. I have chosen the autogenic training: JH Schultz’ relaxation method. This is a state of self-induced slight trance brought on by the use of auto suggestive techniques, which eventually lead to physical and mental relaxation. How to do it? I’ll describe it very briefly, as I’m sure that many books on this subject are available.
- First, you have to make yourself comfortable
- Breathe slow and deep while saying to yourself things like “I’m calm”, “I’m like a big, calm lake”.
- Try to induce yourself the feeling that your body is very heavy, piece by piece, starting for instance with your right arm: “my right arm is heavy”, “my right arm is as heavy as stone”, then move to your left arm, then to your feet and so on.
- Next you induce yourself the sensation of heat, organ by organ, starting again with your right arm: “my right arm is hot” and so on.
- Next you focus on to the face area, with statements such as “I feel my face relaxed”, “My facial muscles are very relaxed”, “My forehead is neat”.
Now you should be feeling like paralyzed, like the slightest movement you would want to make was very difficult. You now enjoy this state of relaxation thinking at something that makes you pleasure (laying on the beach at sunset, relaxing on a nice green meadow, …).
If you are not already sleeping by now, try it again over a few more nights, then come back to my page to see the other tips and tricks to get asleep, or to diminish the symptoms of sleep disorders which can prevent you from living a normal life.

Healthy Diet For Summer

Maintaining a healthy diet in all seasons is many people’s concern in our modern world, when junk foods are overwhelming us and our children with their flavors and taste which are some times irresistible. Summer is the best season for nutrition variations, as a wide range of fruits and vegetables is now available. Our summer healthy diet should be based on as many raw fruits and vegetables. Every summer, I even succeed to get a few kilos off my fat belly, without starving or living with a permanent sensation of hunger. Here is my fitness receipt for the good, nourishing, healthy diet in the summer:
- I eat 5 or 6 meals per day. If you eat at small intervals, then you don’t need to eat so much at once, so overall, the total food intake per one day is smaller than in the case of eating only twice a day huge food portions
- In the morning, I eat mostly fruits. Actually, when I wake up, I have a big glass of fresh fruit juice (without added sugar). Then I have the breakfast after 30 minutes. This usually consists of a mix of fruits such as: water melon, plums, pears, apples and pineapple. I’ve read that raw foods can make a very healthy diet, giving you much more energy than cooked meals. So you can try such things as a banana diet and see if it works for you.
- At noon, I have a light lunch, consisting of various vegetables, prepared together in a frying pan, with a little bit of olive oil and a mix of spices. This is funny, as if you vary the spices, you can cook the same thing several days in a row and get different tastes.
- The next meal comes after a few hours and it consists of a slice of cheese or a small yoghurt
- In the evening I have a small steak or a slice of fish, cooked in the oven, with pepper, garlic, tomatoes and olive oil
- The last snack of the day can be some chocolate or ice cream, or a green pepper with salt, or some tomatoes and peppers salad (whatever I feel in the mood to eat that day or whatever is available in the fridge
As a general rule, I don’t mix fruits with other foods, because I noticed this causes bloating (and recently I read some articles about nutrition which advised to eat fruits separately from other aliments because the way they are digested is different, so in case they are mixed, they ferment and the digestion takes much longer).
A second rule, but also important is not to drink anything during meals or immediately after them. I don’t know why this is good for the body, but I noticed an improvement when doing like that so I decided to stick to this habit.
The third rule is that there is no rule: if you feel like changing this schedule, then do it, as you can start again tomorrow. Wasn’t is a song with lyrics like this: “tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life”? So, tomorrow can be the first day of your healthy diet.

Blood types and nutrition

In this world of hurry, everybody is striving to find a balance. We are under pressure of time, so we want our choices to be fast as well: we eat fast food, we learn how to type fast, we drive fast, we talk fast, we are in such a hurry, that we barely have time to think about our bodies and the effect of this rush on them. More and more people become health-conscious and even though they cannot change their lifestyle for the better, at least they try to minimize the effects of modern society on their health, by trying those advices they can easily integrate in their daily schedule. Such methods are choosing the food by blood types or learning how to increase hdl.
For those of you who want to know more about blood types and their history and origin, I recommend reading this article, written by Paul J. Dunn, MD, charter member of the American Holistic Medical Association, member of the American College of Advancement in Medicine, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, and the Academy of Orthomolecular Medicine, and member and past president of the International Academy of Nutrition and Preventive Medicine. Paul J. Dunn owns a private practice in holistic medicine in Oak Park, Illinois.
The best book to read if you want to know more about blood types and nutrition is Eat Right for Your Type by Peter J. D’Adamo. The book describes in detail all four blood types, with details on beneficial, neutral or forbidden foods, comprising also diet and exercise recommendations for each blood type. Peter D’Adamo also runs a website, where you can find lots of information on his projects, a Blood Type Diet/ Nutrient Value Encyclopedia which includes also pictures of all foods indexed there and which is very easy to use, and a blogging section, where, amongst other blogs, you can read the one of Peter D’Adamo himself. For those of you who only want to make themselves only a quick idea about which foods are beneficial for their blood type, I enumerate them here, as in the book of Peter J. D’Adamo.

Hair removal tips and tricks

Being hairy and showing it is definitely not an option when speaking about women. Even some men want to get hair removal – think at body builders: their fans want to see muscles, lines, edges, not bunches of curly hair growing all over. There are many methods of hair removal, such as shaving, waxing, use of depilatory creams, epilators, lasers or electrolysis. For a detailed documentation on advantages and drawbacks of each method, check out ultimate-cosmetics. For some resources and information about laser hair removal procedures and centers, check Laser Hair Treatment
Whatever method you choose, there are some hair removal tips that you can take into consideration when appropriate:
  1. Never share your razors, as this is a fast way of spreading skin infections.
  2. Use a sharp blade. Worn blades cause skin irritation and they don’t remove all hairs.
  3. Soak the hair in warm water first for at least three minutes. Warm water softens the hair, opens the hair follicles and relaxes the skin. Wet hair reduces wear on the blade.
  4. You can use hair conditioner to help soften the hair before shaving it. Just let it sit for a minute or so, then rinse thoroughly.
  5. Avoid shaving when you first get up after sleeping. Body fluids make the skin more puffy. After 20 to 30 minutes the skin becomes tauter and the hair shaft more exposed.
  6. Don’t apply alcohol-based deodorants or perfumes to skin right after shaving. Follow this basic rule: If it stings or hurts, you shouldn’t be using it.
  7. Carefully remove ingrown hairs with tweezers and make sure you scrub your skin once or twice a week, to prevent hairs to in grow.
  8. Wax instead of shaving, because it lasts longer. If you go for waxing, either buy some one-use waxed stripes or go to a cosmetics center. Using hot wax at home is not advisable, as you can easily burn yourself. Besides, if you spill wax over your carpets, you’ll find a lot of pain in removing it without any trace.
  9. After the hair removal procedure, you can use baby oil to calm down the skin and prevent irritations.
  10. If you can’t stand hair removal, but you don’t like it to be visible, you can bleach it. Bleaching lightens the hair closer to skin color, so that it cannot be noticed so easily. Use only special body hair bleaches.

Busy? Buy a Massage Chair and Relax

Everybody is busy these days. It seems like time is shrinking, forcing us to give up part of our pleasures ans sometimes even part of our duties. Massage is one of the relaxation ways we don’t have too much time for. Going to a massage center requires making an appointment, then respecting it, spending time driving to and from the beauty center… for extremely busy people this may be too much. Luckily, there is a faster way to your daily relaxation: buy a massage chair. I had the chance to try one of these chairs in a shop and I was impressed: that massage chair had air cushions everywhere, so it was able to give you a full body massage, from neck to sole. Moreover, it had the ability to combine different massage techniques, like friction, kneading, tapping, Shiatsu or impact, very easy to select from the remote control that operates the chair. If you are not sure what types of massage to use, you can let the chair do what it has been programmed to, and choose either one of the upper body automatic programs, or a lower body automatic program.
Briefly, I liked the idea of buying such a massage chair for myself, but I had other priorities at that time, so I almost forgot about it. Then I discovered that one of my friends has a company which sells such masage chairs. She promised me to give me the massage recliner I’ve been dreaming of, provided that I help her promote her chairs. This is what I’m doing now, so if you need more info about massage chairs, recliners, or portable massage chairs, just contact my friend and she’ll tell you everything you want to know.

How to give your cat a pill in 7 steps

Do you know how to give a cat a pill? Now I know, but it took me some good practice before managing to do it without spending hours and nerves. I want to share this with you. I’m sure there are so many people out there trying to make their cat swallow pills, so my article will probably help some.
When it comes to swallowing pills, cats are pretty much like children: they would not open their mouth, despite whatever efforts you may try. Unlike children, cats have fangs and claws, and I can tell you they use them if necessary. I’ve had my first cat ever about three months ago, and recently I had to give her some bitter pills. I experimented several methods, such as:
  • Asking somebody to hold the cat, while I tried to sneak the pill into her mouth. This was a complete failure, we got scratched all over and wasted several pills in order to make her swallow one.
  • Crushing the pill, mixing the obtained powder with a sticky food (such as butter or processed cheese) and putting the mixture on the cat’s fur; she could not stand to be so dirty, so she licked the mixture. This worked fine, but she made such a sad face while cleaning herself, that I felt really bad for doing that to her.
  • Wait until she yawns, then throw the pill in her mouth. This would have worked, but the cat could not be convinced to yawn at fixed hours (the pill was supposed to be taken at exactly the same hours every day).
  • After searching the web, asking friends and cat breeders, and a lot of practice with small pieces of food, here it is the best solution to feed your cat a pill:
1. Grab the cat from behind the face, making sure that your thumb and index are positioned on the maxillary joint. It is good if you can do this with the cat sitting on a high place, so you do not need to bend over.

2. Slowly, shift the cat’s head backwards, gently raising her mouth. She does not like it, but she does not object, either. Apply a slight pressure on her jaws, with your thumb and index (or middle finger). The mouth will still be closed.
give your cat a pill 2
3. Gently sneak your middle or ring finger between her front teeth, and push down the bottom jaw. The cat has no power in it when her head is bent backwards, so she won’t bite back. Before attempting this, take the pill and hold it with your thumb and your index finger.
give your cat a pill 3
4. Now, as the cat’s mouth is wide open, throw the pill as fast and as deep as you can inside. Try to aim the bottom of the throat, in order to avoid the contact of the pill with the tongue. Thus, the cat cannot detect the unpleasant taste, so she won’t spit the pill (yet!).
5. Keep her mouth closed and gently rub her neck, until you feel that she swallowed.
give your cat a pill 4
6. Release the cat and watch her closely for about 10 seconds: if she licks her mouth, it means that she swallowed the pill. Nevertheless, look around her, because some cats are tricky: they pretend they swallowed, and when you don’t watch, they spit the pill which was all the time in their mouth (my cat tried this trick with me, when I did not manage to throw the pill deep inside her mouth).
7. Give her a nice treat, so she gets used that this is part of the ritual. She might even give you a smile at the end ;)
happy cat
The Cat Pilling Troubleshooting guide:
Problem: You don’t manage to keep her by the head, so she runs away.
Solution: Show her a toy, so she gets out from behind the sofa, and try again.
Problem: You caught the cat and put her into position, but you cannot sneak your finger between her teeth.
Solution: Try to sneak your fingernail first, but be very gentle (long nails help a lot here).
Problem: You managed to open the cat’s mouth, but you threw the pill directly on her tongue, so she spit it and ran away.
Solution: Give your cat a nice treat, take another pill and repeat the procedure.
Problem: You aimed the throat, but the cat scratched you when you tried to rub her neck, she spit the pill and ran away.
Solution: Try again, but try not to position yourself in front of the cat. Stay behind her, so she cannot reach you with her claws.
Don’t forget that the path to perfection needs a lot of practice. I managed to give my cat a pill without incidents only after five or six trials. Good luck, and happy cats to all of you!
